Does Technology control Us?

Nowadays, everyone got an iPhone or a smartphone which allows them to get access to the Internet and SNSs every minute and every second, on Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. People go to Facebook when they are traveling the MTR, having dinner with their family and friends, and even walking on the street, so does technology control us or do we control technology?
Let's watch a video about how the future technology will make us become.

The man has a pair of lazy eyes, implying the future technology will make us stupid. The Mactini is also an irony of the products of Apple.

At first, I think it’s us that control the technology because technologies are invented by human beings to improve our living standard and lifestyle. Computers make our lives much better when compared to the 70’s. There are computer system behind traffic lights and microwaves, as mentioned in the lesson. I think no matter how advanced the iPhone 4 or MacBook Air is, they still have to control by us, in order to accomplish something. Another example from the lesson is the idea of Hacking. The most popular example would be jailbreaking iPhones because people want to escape from paying the apps in iTunes Store.

But as time goes by, as we are surrounded by so many technologies, we forgot what is around in our surroundings. It is so true that technologies really do allow us to do a lot of things, like Skype, which allows us to contact our family and friends in all over the world or Facebook, which allows us to find your classmates which was sitting next to you in kindergarten. But sometimes people are so tied up with the technologies, like when your lecturer has asked you to do a paper on the impact of Internet on our language use. Students just go to Google and there are already hundreds of papers or researches have been done on this topic. Actually there are lots of books in the library that provides us information, but because of the ease of getting the information online, we fail to leave the Internet behind, so I think the situation now is that we are both controlling each other.

Let's watch an awesome video about the screen technology!

  1. Sometimes I will tell myself stupidly, "If I don't use technology or media, then I will not be controlled by it." LOL. But it is impossible for us to do that.

Nowadays, nearly everything is connected with techonology so we are even controlled more. But actually, I agree with you that both people and technology control each other. So I wonder if technology controls you more or you control it more? For me, technology controls me much more...haha

  2. Absolutely! We can't even live without technology. They are embedded in our lives already and somehow we are dependent on technology so much that once we leave technology, we can't do anything. For example, we have all our contacts stored in our phone and we won't remember any phone numbers anymore. If one day, all the contacts are gone, we would be so nervous because we afraid we cannot find the people we want.

  3. Although we create technology, we control them at the beginning, now we have to rely on them. I think technology sometimes makes us crazy. Many people blindly follow the trend of the market and buy the product as fast as possible but without knowing the true value of that product or the technology. People's obsession to high-tech products even affect teenagers. They also want to use expensive mobile or notebook. That's why our future is the technology!

  4. The video about Mactini is really interesting! I think this is sarcasm of the phenomena that technology is getting smaller and smaller. Inventors believe that the smaller, the better, but actually a smaller screen is not good for our eyes. I also agree that we and technology control each other. Do you think if technology controls you more or you control it more?I understand that technology is invented by human, but only a very small population in the world has the ability to invent it. Do we still control it?

  5. I think it depends on what situation. When we need to jailbreak our iPhone 4, we are already controlling the technology. But all in all, I think that technology controls us more, because it has changed the kinds of things we can do, the way we think, the kinds of relationships we can have, what we can express and who we can be, as mentioned in Week 1. And I think I rely on technologies so much. Whenever my phone or computer don't work suddenly, I would panic.
